Smart Plugs + Echo: A Simple, Budget Smart Home Starter
We use Kasa smart plugs and Amazon Echo devices ourselves, and this pair is the easiest way to start a smart home: no electrician, no hub, and no rewiring.
What a smart plug does
You plug a lamp, fan, or charger into the smart plug, then plug that into the wall. From your phone you can switch it on or off, set schedules, or turn off something you forgot, even when you're away from home.
Why add an Echo
Once your plugs are linked in the Alexa app, you can control them by voice, such as “Alexa, turn off the fan.” The Echo Dot is the small, affordable speaker. The Echo Show 5 adds a screen if you want to see your calendar or smart cameras.
Before you buy
- Wi-Fi band: Kasa plugs connect to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. If your router is dual-band, make sure 2.4 GHz is switched on during setup.
- Load rating: check the maximum load printed on the plug or in the listing. Plugs suit lamps, fans, and chargers best; read the rating before using one with heaters, irons, or air conditioners.
- Voltage: Trinidad and Tobago runs on 60 Hz power at about 110 V (often listed as 115 V), the same range as the US, so US-style plugs fit. Always confirm the voltage on the product listing.
- You don't need an Echo to start: the plugs work from their phone app alone. The Echo only adds voice control.
